Special Info   How best do you tell the story of the life of a woman, a wife, mother, daughter, sister, faithful servant of God, and friend? We do so by revealing a portrait created by the Master’s hand. When God picked up His brush and palette and lay down the first brush strokes of Donna’s life, he began with the small community of Burnt Savannah, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. It is in this place with brilliant golden sunshine, rich green plants, and fertile brown earth, that the master laid the first color of life marked by her birth on September 15, 1966. His all-wise hands drew a father, Leonard Mullings, and Mother, Rudell (Audrey) Bruce who would stand behind her, and whose features would be reflected in her round, smooth, dimpled face. The contours of this precious life would become more vivid in the care of her great grandfather, James Salmon, whom everyone called Papa, and grand uncle, Tatae. The foundations that would illuminate the portrait of her life were laid on this precious canvas through the influence of these two great men. These men who brought her up in the Burnt Savannah SDA church. The images are unforgettable of Uncle Tatae walking with little Donna to church every Sabbath morning. Beside this beautiful chocolate colored girl, God painted the rich brown shades of brothers Collin and Linton, and with every stroke, the vision becomes richer. She was their big sister who was proud that her little brother was the fastest athlete in the school. Her presence in their lives meant love, generosity, and compassion She was protective of them, taking pride in her mommy role. Imagine the richness of the colors of faith, and love for Jesus that was brought into her life by gems of truth that she learned in Sabbath school. The master was not satisfied with only giving spiritual colors to her life; he knew that the picture would be enhanced if she received an education. This would help her to be able to thrive in this world as well. So, beginning with the Knoxwood Basic School with Ms. Caldar, the Miss Vie’s school in Burnt Savannah, followed by Santa Cruz All Age, God continued to round out the shapes and shades that would bring to life the image of the woman that was conceived in His heart. He did not stop when she left the tropical paradise of Burnt Savannah to the busy metropolis of New York. He found her a place at Samuel J. Tilden High School. Still, the master sees that the work can be improved, and any addition that will make the portrait better, he adds. So, he tapped into the ambition he placed behind the eyes in that perfect rounded face, and drew an education in City College where she graduated with a BSN Degree. Here the service part of the Master’s masterpiece takes shape. By the bedsides of the sick, at the Coney Island Hospital, Nurse Chisholm brought that rich, robust, all-encompassing smile, her gentle words, her chuckle of a laughter that brought her head down on her shoulders. Have you ever heard her voice raise a decibel above that calm quiet tone? God developed the strokes of service in the kingdom he first began to draw so long ago, when he brought her to the Brooklyn Faith Seventh Day Church. It was in one-to-one contact with others that she excelled that God brought out her service. She was an usher, Adventurer counselor, member of the Brooklyn Faith Singers, part of the Health Dept. and Head Usher. In this picture God placed touches of gentleness, and sweetness. Donna was a sweet, beautiful person. Will our church’s own scenes not dim without her contribution in the soprano line of the Brooklyn Faith Singers, her calm leadership directing her ushers to fulfill their duties? Will the church Board not look a little dull without her gentle voice from the second row from the back softly but firmly interjecting on behalf of her Department? The Master, who is himself the creator of beauty, knows that His color palate does not only contain pastels, in pinks, and blues. He dips his brush to the stronger shades and drew into the scenes of Donna’s life, strong, but gentle earth-colored tones in Patrick Chisholm, whom she married September 19,1993. This faithful, loving husband, would love and support her to the end. Here God was doing a special thing, in this part of her life. He intended to include more shades of happiness, meaning, and contentment, and most of all, joy. He took his brush to the canvas again and this time, nestled between Patrick and Donna, he placed Gavin. This child, who would look like his mother and father, would be close to his mother and father, and who would be Donna’s project, friend, pride and joy. She brought him to where her life story began; to church, to Sabbath School, health ministries, adventurers to Pathfinders. She was not only an Adventurer counselor; she was a carpool mom, shedding the beautiful colors of her life on young and old. Our own lives were richer because of her. One day the picture of Donna’s life became marred with dull, drab, colors, of sickness, pain, and suffering. These disturbing, painful shades threatened to mar the work of the Master’s hand. The Master knew that a crafty evil being, threatened his masterpiece, so he generously brightened the colors of faith, and hope, and loving care by her husband, son, mother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, that overshadowed the darkness. So, as we stand in this museum of life, and we look at Donna as she came from the Master’s hand. Look carefully and you will see all those placed in her life made her the masterpiece she was. Her mother, Audrey, father Leonard Mullings, brothers Collin & Linton Foster. There to one corner are Mother-in-law, Julia Peart, and her sister in law Claudine who poured out of herself love and compassion and cared for Donna in her time of illness. In the other corner is adopted son, Shane Salmon. Visible over her shoulders are uncles; Anthony and Junior, Aunts; Mildred, Eletia, Ellora, Joan, and Lucine. The beautiful glow you see shadowing her is Esminda Salmon, (in England), and around her frame in the perfectly chosen spots are seven other sisters and brothers-in- law, seven aunts and uncles in law, nephews, and nieces. Still there is color left on the master’s palate. How can He use them to complete the portrait of Donna’s life? He generously paints, special friends, like Ann Hamilton from their days at Samuel J. Tilden High School, Dianne Raguette, Greta Edwards, Medina Budhan, and the late Gloria Ford, and many others at Brooklyn Faith. Ms. Anderson and Ms. Hart from Coney Island, relatives, a loving church family, and coworkers at whose side she worked all these years. The Master’s work is not ended. Left in his palette are shades of white. He painted her a white robe washed with the blood of His son. He places Donna Mullings-Chisholm on the sea of glass, among the innumerable company of those who He has redeemed from the earth. He is finally satisfied, and inscribes at the end of his work; “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.” Signed Alpha and Omega.
