Verna Angelica Mongerard
88 Years Loved!!
Verna Angelica Mongerard was born on March 15, 1936, and transitioned to her heavenly home on January 15, 2025, at the age of 88. She was born in Banes, Cuba to Charles Renford Myers and Iris May Ming Myers. She migrated to America in 1959 and lived with her uncle Stanley for some years before striking out on her own. She was always supported by her brother, sister, cousins and friends. After working many types of jobs, she became a home attendant. Verna was able to fulfill her lifelong desire to become a nurse after years of intensive study. When she graduated from nursing school, she began working at Beekman Downtown Hospital in Lower Manhattan. She stayed at Beekman for 36 years. During that time, she saved for and purchased four houses. Verna was respected and well-liked by her peers. She was regarded as a diligent, caring nurse as demonstrated by the many notes of appreciation and gifts that she received from patients. In the middle of her career, she studied to become a scrub nurse and worked alongside renowned cosmetic and orthopedic doctors. She was a proud member of the 1199 SEIU of NYC. She retired at age 70 to care for her father who transitioned to be with God in 2012 at the age of 104.
The greatest love of her life was her family. She was the mother of four biological children and one step-daughter, sixteen grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. Verna enjoyed motherhood, family gatherings, parties, the beauty of flowers, nursing, good nutrition, reading her bible, and giving gifts to friends and loved ones. She was wise and often advised her children and grandchildren on life matters and how to achieve full happiness. Her children never heard her complain about anything. She was a cheerful, witty, virtuous, courageous, generous, kind, humble and industrious woman who always maintained a warm, inviting home and who taught all her children to do the same. She raised her children to have discipline, to know and love God, and to live according to Christian values. While Verna worked hard to give her children the best that she could, she always stressed the primary importance of family love and unity. She was a loving and dedicated daughter to her parents who lived with her after they migrated from Cuba to the United States and until they transitioned to live with God. She supported family members (Sandra, Anthony, Annia, Alex and Andy) in Cuba emotionally and financially. She was a loving second mother to her brother and sister. Verna was an honest, God-fearing soul. We are blessed to have had such an angel in our lives. Her legacy will live on for generations and she will be forever loved and deeply missed.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Iris Myers, husband Joseph Mongerard, nephew Paul Anthony Coleman, brother-in-law Paul Coleman, sister-in-law Phyllis Myers, in-law Beryl Forest, uncle Leslie Ming, Sr., cousins Ruth Lodena Myers and Clayton Ming, and numerous aunts and uncles who lived in Cuba.
