Special Info Elizabeth Rhodella McGowan, affectionately known as Liz, Rhodella, and Lizzy, entered eternal rest surrounded by love. Born in Queens, New York, on September 13, 1966, Liz was the beloved daughter of the late James McGowan and Emma Lee Latten.

Liz grew up in Queens New York, where she quickly became known for her infectious laugh, caring heart, and ability to bring people together. She attended Andrew Jackson High School and later went on to graduate from Berkeley College, earning her degree in accounting—an achievement she was deeply proud of.
She made her home in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy community, where her kindness, strength, and warmth touched countless lives. Liz had a gift for making everyone feel welcome—her home was open to all, and her heart even more so.
Liz's professional life reflected her dedication and compassion. She worked as a bookkeeper for Literacy Inc. and as a grant manager for Ocean Bay, where she used her talents to serve the community and help others thrive. She made lasting friendships everywhere she went, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity.
In her younger years, Liz was a proud Girl Scout, a role that sparked her lifelong appreciation for nature, kindness, and community. She loved spending time outdoors, surrounded by animals and the beauty of the world around her. At home, she found joy in the simple pleasures—especially playing board games and cards with her family and friends, where laughter and connection were always at the heart of every gathering.
But perhaps one of the greatest joys in Liz's life was the love she shared with her husband, Michael Brown. The two were childhood sweethearts, their bond growing stronger with every year. Their love was the kind that others admired—deep, patient, and full of laughter. Together, they built a life rooted in friendship, devotion, and understanding.
Liz and Michael loved to travel and explore new places together. Whether it was a quiet getaway, a family road trip, or simply discovering hidden gems around the city, every adventure was filled with love, humor, and unforgettable memories. They were true companions, always hand in hand—proof that soulmates are real and love can stand the test of time.
Liz was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother and a trusted friend. Liz leaves behind her husband, Michael Brown and the entire Brown family. Her children: Curtis McGowan, Jasmine McGowan, Nikeem Dixon and grand-children Emma Mae McGowan and Jalissa Lemons.

She will also be deeply missed by her siblings James Pickney (Della Pickney), Paula Zalia Dunbar(Ziti Dunbar), Angela Croyle( Junior) her god-sisters , Tonya Goosby, and Victoria Townes (Barsfield), and her many godchildren: Aaron Goosby, Leiann Barrow, Jason Robinson, Vedella Townes, Daniel Robinson, Emily Lantigua, Eleyssia Espinoza and Dee Jay Mendez.

Her love extends to a large family of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, including Makini Dunbar( Tyshay Daniel), Majadi Dunbar, Mbeja Dunbar(April Hayes), Cassandra Gee(Carl Hester), Zalia Scott(Eric Scott), Caleb Hester, Kamari Dunbar, Kyrah Hester, Malik Dunbar, Makail Daniel, Calil Hester, Ayana Dunbar, Aniyah Dunbar, Elijah Scott, Jahi Scott, Nyla Wright, and Chelsea Wright, as well as a host of extended relatives and dear friends.

She had a gift for seeing the best in others and lifting their spirits, even during her own challenges. Her legacy is one of love, faith, and community—a legacy that will continue to shine through all who were blessed to know her.

Though she is no longer with us in body, her light will forever remain in our hearts. Her laughter, wisdom, and love will echo through generations.

"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die." — Thomas Campbell
