Special Info  Obituary~ Etheline Claire Brown Etheline Claire Earle was born on October 21st, 1923, to Simeon and Satira Earle (nee Montague), in Panama, Central America. She was one of 2 children born to Satira, having an older brother Whitney. Her mother was a labor organizer with Marcus Garvey and her father was a bookkeeper. She was 97 years old when she left this earth on April 27th, 2021. Etheline was married to Joscelyn Brown on January 30th, 1946 in Kingston, Jamaica. They immigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1948 and eventually to New York City. She became a naturalized citizen in 1953. They have 5 children and 3 grandchildren and had been married for 62 years upon his death in 2008. Etheline was an ambitious and enterprising woman. Although she was a stay-at-home mom for most of her young and middle adult life, she managed to have an engaging and fulfilling career. She was an accomplished seamstress, who developed a cottage industry sewing dresses for friends and acquaintances. Before her children were born, she worked as an assistant to a Broadway costumer. She was a skilled hairdresser, who developed another home-business doing the hair of friends and acquaintances. While sewing clothes and doing hairdressing at home, she also managed to: successfully raise her 5 children, become a founding member of her block association, take night classes in bookkeeping, work as a summer Head Start teacher, become a skilled and delicious cook and baker and eventually became co-owner (with her husband Joscelyn) and bookkeeper for one of the most successful West Indian cocktail lounges in Brooklyn. That was just the first act of her life and career. In 1975 Etheline and her husband “retired” and moved the family to Poinciana, Florida. Although she had been very fearful of driving, Etheline earned her driver’s license, bought a car and took classes at both Ridge Vocational Technical Center and Valencia Community College. She eventually got a job at the Orlando International Airport as a transportation security officer, pre-TSA. She met many interesting and famous people during her time there. While living in Florida, she also became a leader in her local church and a member of the Ladies Guild in her town. In 2004, after 3 hurricanes damaged their Florida home, Etheline and her husband moved back to New York on an emergency basis. This eventually became permanent, when they realized they had reached a life stage which required them to live near their children. They moved into their son and son-in-law’s apartment in Brooklyn and Etheline quickly became a beloved fixture in both the building and the neighborhood. She was the consummate mother and nurturer, who always had time and a kind word for a neighbor or stranger. She performed quiet acts of kindness throughout her life, which endeared her to many people. She would frequently make breakfast or lunch and surprise her building’s or neighborhood supermarket’s employees. She would surprise her doctors or neighbors with scrumptious cakes that she baked from scratch. She would spend hours on the phone listening to and counseling friends and neighbors through problems. She was honest and sometimes gave tough advice. She mothered anyone whom she felt needed someone. Of all of the achievements in her life, Etheline was most proud of being a good mother. She always prioritized her family and made it clear that they came first, no matter what. She was a strong moral compass for her family. She made sure that her 5 children were well-educated and decent human beings, who realized that giving back to the world was the key to a successful life. Etheline is survived by her children Patricia Hinds, Earl Brown, Karen Brown, Janet Brown-Friday and Necole Brown. She is also survived by her grandchildren Katherine Hinds, Taylor Hinds and Vahn Friday, as well as her sons-in-law, Leonard Hinds, Robert Murayama, Clement Friday and Keith Dowdell.
