Obituary of Winston Smith
Dr. Winston Cleveland Smith Ph. D. was born on June 17th 1940 in Devonshire
Castle, Essequibo Coast in Guyana, he transitioned peacefully during the early
morning of Tuesday May 4 2021 in Queens, NY.
He attended Saint Lawrence Anglican School where he obtained a primary school
education. While attending St. Lawrence, the headmaster urged him to continue
his education in Georgetown since there was no high school on the Essequibo Coast.
He obtained his high school certificate at Tutorial High School and upon completion
he returned to teach at Saint Agnes Anglican School in Danielstown, Essequibo and
Anna Regina High School in Essequibo.
Winston obtained his B.Sc. Degree in Social Services from the University of Guyana
in 1967 in the first graduating class of the University. In 1974 he graduated from
The University of Guelph (Canada) with a Masters in Agriculture Economics. His
academic studies also took him to England, Trinidad (Univ of WI) and Barbados
(CDB). In 1993, he obtained his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Century
University in the United States.
Winston joined the Guyana Public Service in 1961. Between 1968 and 1970, he
served as an Economist in the Ministry of Works, Hydraulics and Housing. From
1970 to 1972, he was an Economist in the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Winston worked as an Agricultural Economist in the Ministry of Agriculture in
1974 before being appointed General Manager of the Guyana Marketing
Corporation in 1978. He then worked at the Caribbean Community Secretariat
(CARICOM) in Georgetown, Guyana as a Consultant to the United Nations then as
a Senior Agricultural Economist, a position which from he resigned in 1986 when
he decided to relocate his family to the United States. Winston retired from his
position as a Project Manager / City Planner from the NYC Department of Housing
Preservation and Development in 2008. He was the author of three books and a
contributing columnist for Caribbean Life Newspaper for many years.
Winston believed in entrepreneurship and always encouraged his family and
friends to explore multiple streams of income. He was an eloquent and talented
storyteller who enjoyed drawing, working in his garden, traveling, dancing and
entertaining. He was always the life of the party.
He was the son of the late Oscar and Maud (Teacher Maud) Smith.
He was the husband of the late Veronica Victoria Smith (nee Chance).
Father to Averil Smith, Carolann Smith, Gregson Smith (Bridgett), Sharon
Sullivan (James) and Renee Alexander (Neil).
Brother of Mayleen, Ermie, Myrna, Irma, Yvonne, Ingrid and the late Beulah.
Brother-in-law of Waveney Neckles (Norris), Doreen Scott (Sydney), Linda Leach
(Cramwell), Jennifer Richmond (Wainwright) and Linden Chance (Lorna).
Grandfather of Felicia Twesme (Bradley), Darien Parris, Jaden Smith, Justin
Smith, Aulana Alexander, Aurora Alexander, Auyana Alexander and Auriya
Alexander.
Winston also leaves to mourn a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and
Beverly Vanier to whom he was married for a short time |
