Donette Pamela Marks-Hassell commonly known as "Dulfie" to her close friends and family was the only child to her parents. The family moved to Lot3, Public Road, Prospect, East Bank, Demerara. They easily assimilated into the community. In the 1970's the family moved to Covent Garden Island to live after her step grandfather Mr. Lane pass away which is where she grew up and met her life-long friends Joy, Carol and Janice Prescod; Tessa Cooper; the late Debbie Jack; Pam Livan; Shelly Chung; Alison Hunte; Kim and Demsie Jacobs; Debra Gittings; Yonette Sarribo; Paulette Terrence and Nicky Cooper and Roxanne Dawson. Donette’s mum was the manager of the buying club for the regional Secretary for Region 4, Guyana and in 1973. The family was transferred to the Timehri, East Bank, Demerara, Guyana branch where she managed the multi complex Donette attended Timehri Primary for a two-year period before returning to the Island. Donette was educated at Covent Garden Primary school and continued at Covent Garden Secondary School where she left with several O Levels. Donette became extremely popular in her teens and had a large friendship group she was involved in extra-curricular activities in particular dancing. She attended Sylaners Dancing School with Carol & Janice Prescott; Audrey Wilkey; Tessa Cooper; Roxanne Dawson and Dimsie Jacobs to name a few. This was the highlight of her life, which took her across various regions of the country. Donette frequently reminisce on things that happened with great appreciation and fondness. In 1982, Donette met and fell in love with Quincy Shallow at age 16 and at the young age of 17 Donette fell pregnant, soon after the couple got married in April 1983 and they welcome Kevin into the world. Donette lived with her mum and husband in an extended family arrangement, and they raised Kevin together. Donette love her friends dearly especially the ones she manages to build a close relationship and bond with. Although it is known that she also likes the village people, their background or position in life was of no interest to her, the most accommodating, down to earth individual known. She spoke to and treated everyone with the same dignity and respect and wore her heart on her sleeves. Her interactions which came with jokes, and a sense of humor like no other. Donette's very gregarious and friendly personality gained her admiration amongst her peers and everyone she crossed path with. Her popularity was a force to be reckoned with and made her likeable to all. Donette was one of the funniest characters amongst her friends growing up and continued throughout her, she is known for one liner jokes usually about someone that would have you laughing. She also had a side to her that she was known for her plain speaking which was not always received well and got her into trouble with adults except for her mother’s friends who knew her well such as, Shirley Phillips, Dolly Milo and the famous late Drena Peters, the late Elsa Gittens; Lynette Naidu; Olga Prescod; Dolly Milo the late Drena Peters and Loreen Dawson. In 1984, when Kevin was one year old, Donette began her work life and secured a trainee teaching job at a private nursery in the village. However, after a few months she did not enjoy the job and decided to return to education. Donette started at Sings Secretarial School to pursue a secretarial career. It was at Sings where she met and became friends with Shevonne Bunbury who she described as her adopted sister. Donette completed the training in 1986 but decided that she did not want to work in the secretarial field and subsequently returned to teaching after completing the courses. In 1986 – 1988 she worked at Republic Park Nursery School, EBD, Guyana. In 1988 – 1990 she works at The Parliament of Guyana as a Clerical Assistant to the Clerk of the National Assembly. Sadly, that union ended, and she subsequently met Stephen Hassell during a holiday to Guyana in 2006 and they got married on 7th April 2007 that marriage also ended. She would often speak about not receiving love she felt she deserved and would say “me don’t have luck with man”. Donette was passionate about teaching and spoke of the joy that educating children brought to her life April of 2001, she became a US citizen, which was a long-term aspiration she held for several years going back to her childhood. Donette embarked on a course of learning at a Medgar Evers College at the City University of New York where she met her friend Mitzie in 2001 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.
