Special Info  Born Lakie Louise Roberson, the youngest of 9 children in Eastern North Carolina near Robersonville, Lakie never adopted her first name, and preferred to be called Louise throughout her life. Louise had 2 sisters and 6 brothers whom she loved. Although she was accustomed to hard work, she was spared on numerous occasions by her older sister Ruth, who often carried her in the fields while they worked. Her eldest sister, Elizabeth, worked hard at home cooking and cleaning daily, while the other girls and their mother worked hard in the fields. Due to the need for crop harvesting and feeding many mouths, school took a back seat to field work. Louise completed eight grades of education but was not deterred by her incomplete formal education. She read EVERYTHING, EVERYDAY and was informed about many things due to her avid thirst for reading. Also, until the day she left this world, Louise had the most incredible calligraphic penmanship anyone has seen. Marrying her childhood sweetheart at age 18, Louise and her husband James, worked hard to ultimately purchase a home in Queens, NY. James worked numerous concurrent odd jobs to provide for his new bride in 1951. With 3 daughters born within the first 5 years of marriage, Louise stayed home to care for the three as her husband worked his way up the NYC MTA ultimately rising to Motorman (train driver) over the next decade. A few years later, Louise and James were blessed with three additional children, two boys and a girl. Despite their hard work and numerous jobs in addition to raising six children, Louise and James NEVER compromised on their family. It was not uncommon to pack up all 6 kids and travel to visit family from Connecticut to North Carolina. Friday family nights often included car rides through New York City, movie nights with ice cream or pizza, and game nights. Love abounded in the Roberson home, fueled by Louise and James Roberson. Louise continued to care for her children at home, but with six mouths to feed, once her youngest son entered school, she went to work, and the older siblings assisted with the younger children. With no prior electrical or factory skill, Louise obtained a job as an Electrical Solderer at General Instruments, a major electrical plant on Long Island. She worked there over a decade until a work-related injury forced her to retire. After remaining at home for many years, Louise yearned to return to the workforce. She began a new occupation which admittedly was the most enjoyable position she had ever had. Louise became a Cafeteria Aide assisting with lunch distribution at a neighborhood school. She LOVED the children and they LOVED HER! The children looked upon Ms. Louise as the nice cafeteria lady who would often give them extra portions when the other Cafeteria Aides refused. During the time Louise worked in the school system, her husband was called to the ministry. Although already in his 50’s, James felt the Lord had work for their lives which was yet to be fulfilled. Louise supported her husband’s vision and within a decade, she and her husband had risen through the ranks of the ministry, purchasing a building, and opening the “New Covenant Church of Christ, the second chance church”. James served as Pastor, and Louise First Lady, for over a decade. Their dream of doing the Lord’s work was realized in a relatively short period of time, from the souls they brought to Christ, to the mouths they fed through mission work. Shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary in which they renewed their vows before scores of family and friends, then Bishop James Roberson was called home suddenly. Louise had often said she lost her “best friend” with Bishop’s passing. Following her husband’s death, Mother Roberson was ordained and Pastored New Covenant Church of Christ for 4 years until finally turning over the church and relocating to Maryland to live near her youngest son. In Maryland, Mother Roberson built her own home where she intended to live until, as she always said, “I close my eyes for the last time…” Mother Roberson lived incredibly independently in Maryland for over a decade, with minor assistance from her children until she became ill, which required her to have an in-home caregiver until her passing. Desiring to see as many of her family members as she could, Louise celebrated her last Mother’s Day on a “Zoom Call” several months ago. Living strongly until the end, Mother Roberson asked her Lord to take her home and asked us to let her go in the weeks before her transition. Mother left in peace to be with our Lord on Thursday, August 25, 2022, on the day which would have been her 72nd Wedding Anniversary. Mother Roberson is pre-deceased by her siblings Jesse Anderson, LaCallas Andrews, Dewitt Andrews, Mayo Simmons, Elijah Maye, John Robert Maye, Bervil Elizabeth (Liz) McCloud and Lillian Ruth Purvis. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Bishop James C. Roberson, and her eldest daughter Cynthia Diane Newman (Jarod). She is survived by 5 children Loretta Johnson, Theresa Cowans (Jerome), Leon Roberson (Frankie), Sharon Roberson and James C. Roberson Jr. (Wendy). She is survived by 13 grandchildren Dierdre L. Johnson, Lewis M. Tate Jr, John R. Johnson Jr., Carl T. Tate, Jeffrey Cowans, Russel J. Cowans IV, John J. Tate, Jonathan C. Cowans, Sean W. Roberson, James C. Roberson III, Andreas J. Roberson, Alexandra N. Roberson, and Jarett Roberson. She has 16 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The family of Lakie Louise Roberson wishes to acknowledge with sincere appreciation the comforting messages, prayers and the many other expressions of kindness and concern extended to us during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, any gifts of love may be directed to LPWministries.com. These gifts will help the continued work of Louise Roberson’s Pastor (Rev. Dr. Lee P. Washington) who spiritually guided her through her Christian walk in Maryland.

this is harder than i couldve ever imagined. ive lost so much this year but this one hits different. good times now transitioned to great memories. let me just say what an honor it is to be apart of you. i can honestly say ive never met anyone strong like you grandma. from the growing up stories ive heard from my mom, aunts and uncles to watching you carry the roberson legacy solo after 50 years of marriage says so much about your character. you were never alone. we had your back for sure. but the army can only be as strong as their leader. your strength got us all through. you mean so much to me and ill never forget you. its also a blessing that my daughter was able to know you. she loved her great grandma and spoke of you often. your words to me saying always take care of myself and my daughter will forever be embedded in my mind. your laughter ill miss. the faces you make when listening to a story that doesnt sound right ill miss. writing these memories are actually making me feel better. ill never forget at thanksgiving when i came to visit and i had my hair braided. you questioned me about my braids and i said grandma a lot of ppl like my hair. you looked at me and said what ppl said that? with a straight face and then gave a smile and laughed. you had me ready to run to the barber shop asap. losing you hurts but knowing ive gained an angel supersedes that pain. i love you grandma your grandson sean r.
