Special Info  Eulogy: Shelly Thorpe It’s unfortunate, that you all are gathered here today under these circumstances, but that means I have gained my wings and, I want you all to know I’m at peace with God my personal savior. My name is Shelly Thorpe, I was born in Belair, St. George, Barbados, West Indies. I went to school at Saint Augustine Girl’s Primary School, graduated to West St. Joseph Secondary School and then to Girl’s Industrial Union where I graduated from High School. From that point is where I started all my achievements, such as dress making, cake icing, building furniture and much more. Listen guys, I have to make this shorter or else I will be here all day, and I don’t want to be late. I migrated to the USA in the early 90s, and went crazy when I saw all of the opportunities that were in front of me. I worked as a babysitter, sold MaryKay and Avon, continued to design and sowed clothing for clients and Fashion Shows, joined a dance group and participated in Ballroom competitions which I really enjoyed. As time moved on, things got slow career wise, and so I moved onto something else. I then studied to be a PCA/Home Health Aide, because I had a passion in me to help people, but as some of you may know; I get bored quickly. And once again, I decided to move on from that. As a result, I became an Access-A-Ride driver, but found that it was taking too much of my time away from my family, and decided it was time to go. That’s when I decided to go back to being a Home Health Aide where I could balance my time between family and work. In April 2005, I became a member of the Independent United Order of Mechanics Nightingale Chapter #6 under the Jurisdiction of Composite District Grand Lodge #2. While at the lodge, I achieved my highest degree in my chapter, Past Matron and Sir Knight. While there I gained certificates in achievements and have to say the lodge was truly my second family. On April 14th, 2012, I became a member of the Lion’s Club Brooklyn New Arisen Club. During my time there I volunteered religiously with my club members during the holidays, for events and donated to different initiatives. After my 50th birthday party, I decided to start decorating for other events, because of all the compliments I received. I have to say it became my dream, and who would’ve thought that at that age I would be starting something new that I loved. When I met with my clients, they just told me what they wanted, and a light bulb would go off in my head and I would transform anything or event space as they wished. In the beginning, Alexis (my youngest daughter) was helping me decorate. She could work, but one day she said, “mom I’m too grown now.” I simply replied, “That’s ok,” because I understood that she is growing up and would be interested in different things. Lexi, you are growing into a wonderful young lady, and I hope you do well in college, actually, I know you will, and you will get the help from your big sisters. Once Lexi, was done helping, I decided to turn my hobby into a business; “Luxury Décor Event Planning and Party Rentals.” As a result of an influx of clients I was receiving, I partnered with Chinelle to help me. I honestly have to thank my family and friends for giving me the opportunities, referrals and for making my dream come through. I leave to mourn my mother Movelle King, my father Victor Richards, my three beautiful and blessed daughters, Sueann, Nicolette Bowen and Alexis Thorpe-Marious. My grandkids Dylan Bowen-Grant, Isabella Bowen, Leoh and Kimora Roberts. My sisters Betty, Sandra and Kim Thorpe, Susan Richards and brothers Mervin Thorpe, Toni, Anthony and Anderson Richards. My aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and many more.
