Melvin Cornelius Barnett was born in Jefferson County, AL to James Barnett and Berniece Cunningham on June 3, 1930. He grew up with a love for football and fast cars. He spent most of his Sundays as a youth in his grandfather J.C. Cunninghams’ church, Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL.
As a young adult he enlisted in the army and served 2 years in the Korean War. Upon his return, he attended Miles College in Fairfield, AL to further his education. In the 1960s he relocated to Brooklyn, NY for a fresh start and worked several jobs until he found his career home at Wykoff hospital as a lead surgical and anesthesia technician. Melvin retired from Wyckoff hospital after over 40 years of service.
In his later years in life, Melvin enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as taking short and long trips on his motorcycle.
In addition to his wife Lynnea Aarons- Barnett, Melvin is survived by his daughters Cornelia Lloyd (Dwayne Lloyd), Tracey Royster, and Melanie Barnett. His son Michael Roacher (Sophia Santiago), daughter in law Ivelisse Pimentel and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews .
He was preceded in death by his mother Bernice C. Johnson, fathers James Barnett and James Johnson, brother James B. Johnson, wife Betty-Jo Barnett, and two sons Terrence Barnett and Melvin C. Barnett Jr.
